Operations provides specialist support across all STFC Scientific Computing research and expertise areas and programmes through a variety of strategic, business functions.
This includes:
- Leadership of projects, programmes, proposals, procurement, resources, budgets, governance and risk.
- Creating and implementing a business development strategy.
- Providing specialist scientific communications creating case studies and social media content to ensure the impact of our work reaches a wide audience.
- Dedicated support to host and manage attendance at national and international conferences.
- Support for early careers, apprenticeships, and industrial placements.

Business Administration
Led by Shirley Miller, this group of dedicated professionals, based in both Daresbury and Harwell, provide administrative support for our hybrid workforce, with particular focus on:
- Administration support for projects, programmes and themes.
- Events, training and workshop management.
- PA support for the senior leadership team.
- Recruitment and onboarding support.
Communications and Impact
Led by Marion O’Sullivan, this group actively:
- Demonstrates the impact of Scientific Computing’s research and expertise in accelerating crucial scientific research, through a variety of methods to multiple audiences.
- Targets Government, funding bodies, international industries, academia and media, with timely information relating to science and technology priorities.
- Provides specialist communications support for crisis and reputational management issues.
Project Management
Underpinning crucial business functions, this group led by David Macaree, provides:
- Bid Management
- Budget planning
- Governance and risk management
- Procurement management
- Project and Programme Management
- Resource Management
Research and Innovation Development
Led by Marion Samler, this group actively:
- Develops a business development strategy for Scientific Computing.
- Builds strategic partnerships across research communities.
- Champions Scientific Computing’s capabilities and expertise across Academic, Government and industry groups.
- Shares market intelligence and identify new opportunities and funding for emerging areas of research and technologies.
- Provides specialist support for the bid management process.
Operations is fundamental to the success of Scientific Computing enabling technical and scientific staff to excel in their activities. It is a pleasure to work collaboratively with all parts of Scientific Computing to achieve excellence which would not be achievable in isolation.
